Patent translation: the importance of language in protecting products and intellectual property

Our National Translation Studies Conference on 21.10.2010 emphasised the importance of accurate and informed translation services for safeguarding intellectual property and protecting products in international markets. During the conference, we also showcased the solutions developed by our Groups’ companies, which provide patent translation and linguistic consultancy services in the fields of mechanical engineering, electronics and in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.

Technical terminology validation

At the conference, we presented our Terminology Research Protocol, an innovative tool that we apply to identify, verify and validate the technical terminology used in our translations.

Expert translators

The use of our native-speaking translators, who are appropriately updated on technical and linguistic developments in the industrial sector, is an essential requirement for understanding and producing high quality translations in engineering fields. Our offices are home to teams of permanent staff who are bound by professional confidentiality and always available for continuous collaboration with our clients.

100% quality control of texts

All our translated texts are subject to UNI EN 15038, ISO 17100 and ISO 27001 certified quality control. Our Quality Assurance system requires that every translation is produced by team of translators, revisers and terminology specialists, who ensure accuracy of form and content through thorough cross-checks.

Confidentiality

Studio Moretto Group’s many years of experience in translating for the Italian Defence and leading companies in the arms sector have led to the implementation of systems for managing confidential and secret information.

Most requested languages for patent translation

Approximately 60% of our technical patent translations are into English, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian and German. The remainder of the translations predominantly include Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Greek and Turkish.

In recent years, we have seen a sharp increase in the demand for translations into Eastern languages such as Arabic, Chinese and Korean. This growth has generated more opportunities for our team of translators specialising in these languages, a team we have been growing since 2007.

We offer some practical guidance and advice for patent registration translations, inviting clients to verify any procedural updates with the relevant authorities.

Requesting a European patent:

After your patent is examined and validated by the EPO (European Patent Office), it will need to be translated into the languages of the countries where it is recognised. We advise checking the applicability of the Unitary Patent, a European Commission project that provides protection in all EU countries by simply submitting patent applications to the EPO in English, French or German. If the applicant submits the patent application in another language, the EPO will reimburse the translation into one of the three official languages. Once one of the three official languages is chosen, it must be maintained for the duration of the patent.

Requesting an international patent (PCT):

You must submit an application to WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation) with headquarters in Geneva: please note that communications with WIPO must be in English, French or German.
